This course is one of a series developed by Jyoti Manuel

Jyoti has led the path in the UK for the delivery of therapeutic yoga for children with special and additional needs.

It is with great humility and gratitude that we invite you to experience the teaching of Special Yoga. Having been blessed to share yoga with thousands of children with Down Syndrome all over the world we have witnessed it’s extraordinary power to help us truly reach our full potential over and over again. That potential is not only physical, but also mental, emotional, physiological, energetic, neurological and spiritual. Through the practice of Special Yoga we want children to gain the most strength and balance they can in every way, to release their fears and to achieve what they have come into this life and this body to do. Yoga gives them this opportunity. Yoga, when practised in a therapeutic way, helps us to manage our emotions, increase our concentration, and maintain attention. It is a lifelong practice for developing inner peace and calm.

On our courses you'll learn the three different aspects of the Special Yoga methodology, taught using a variety of tools with mentor and community support throughout.

Learn how your state matters

The underpinning of Special Yoga offers practices to support you emotionally and energetically to bring the best to each individual that we are blessed to practise yoga with. Our state matters. The compassionate practices that form the foundation of Special Yoga’s methodology give us the tools to change our inner state. As we change our inner landscape, we offer ourselves as a model for the potential of each individual to flourish and thrive.

BREATHWORK - engaging the breath to regulate and calm

Learning to control and work with our breathing has many powerful benefits. The deeper we breathe, the more we oxygenate our bodies, the more emotionally regulated we are, and the more varying systems of the body are improved. We will share a variety of practices to support the child to find their breath as well as support the child's vital energy, physical and emotional health.

SOUND & SONG - Using the vibration of sound to calm the nervous system and create health and wellbeing

This module teaches you how to use the vibration of sound and rhythm to improve concentration, motor planning and motor coordination. The vibration of sound is not only deeply joyful but can help improve the quality of breath and the strength of the lungs.

RELAXATION - help the child(ren) drop into the deepest place of relaxation

This module looks at different pathways to enhance the possibility for the individual to relax and calm. Supporting the individual to relax deeply allows the systems of the body and brain to restore themselves. This is where the brain and body are at its optimum state for our learning and potential.

MINDFULNESS - managing and accepting our human emotions

This module offers a variety of mindfulness practices to help children, young and older people become more self-aware and bring an understanding of what is happening in their brains. We will share a variety of mindfulness tools to help them to manage their emotional state compassionately and kindly. Learning how to manage and accept our human emotions is an important life skill that may bring improved mental and emotional health resilience.

MASSAGE & ENERGY - enhancing the wellbeing of the Down Syndrome community

This module shares a variety of basic massage and energy practices that help to regulate and support the autonomic nervous system, improve immunity and bring balance and peace to body and mind.

ASANA - using deeply effective postures and movements

Special Yoga uses a few simple but deeply effective postures and movements to bring balance, core strength, flexibility, motor planning and coordination. This course will offer adapted practices for all ages from babies to adults, that are specifically relevant to this population. A therapeutic yoga programme gives us the understanding of the value of the postures energetically, emotionally and physiologically, creating a natural flow of movement that supports each individual.

WORKING WITH THE FEET - to open up the body

This module teaches you how to work with the feet to open the body up, stimulate the lungs and digestive organs, and support the health and wellbeing of the individual. Working with the feet can strengthen the muscles of the feet and bring more balance for standing and walking.
